Example Of A Colder Climate: The Ordovician Climate (488 To 444 Million Years Ago)

• The Ordovician is an example of a past climate which was much colder than the climate that we are experiencing today

• The supercontinent of Gondwana drifted over the south pole, initiating a great Ice Age that gripped the earth at this time.

• Gondwana, particularly Africa, straddled the South Pole and became extensively glaciated. There were even glaciers in what is now the Sahara.

• Metazoans were severely affected. About 60% of animal genera became extinct, making this the second or third most deadly mass extinction of the Phanerozoic
